A human resources generalist's cover letter needs to capture the reader's attention from the very first paragraph. As a generalist, the most important point to convey in the cover letter is her capability of functioning in all the HR disciplines with equal expertise. A cover letter also should depict a personal side, since HR is a people-focused role within the organization.


The introduction of a human resources generalist states the position the applicant is interested in, as well as a brief statement of her background, education and credentials. This paragraph should be straightforward and succinct, as in: "As a skilled, detail-focused and qualified HR professional with an M.S. in HR management and a B.S. in HR development, I am looking for new opportunities and challenges, and am interested in the HR generalist position your company advertised on LinkedIn."

Core Competencies

Core competencies for an HR generalist consist of strong communication skills, analytical and critical thinking processes, and team-building and leadership qualities. The next paragraph in the HR generalist's cover letter should state: "My core strengths include clear communication skills, high aptitude for learning, team-building capabilities and the ability to lead cross-discipline projects. I have expertise in all the HR disciplines, including recruitment and selection, employee relations, training and development, compensation and benefits, and risk management safety. In addition, I am proficient in HR information systems and applicant tracking systems."


An HR generalist's cover letter describes more than her expertise in all the HR disciplines. In a paragraph that sets out significant contributions to the workplace, short descriptions such as these are effective: "Here are the areas in which I excel: 1) Recruitment and Selection: Knowledge of recruitment and selection plans using best practices to attract and retain candidates. 2) Relationship Management: Provide excellent customer service to all levels of staff, management and clients. Strong commitment to building long-term and positive relationships to support the company’s vision, strategies and goals. 3) Organizational Development: Evaluate company structure and business strategies and create initiatives for change and improvement. 4) Employee Relations: Provide coaching, training and mentoring to build cohesiveness and consistency across all business lines."


A statement about the HR generalist's approachability and willingness to work with team members, peers and management adds a humanizing touch to the applicant's business side. Include this as a subsequent paragraph: "As a resourceful team player, I can tackle and solve complex training and technical issues, and build consensus across all levels of staff, management, clients and key decision-makers."


The closing of an HR generalist's cover letter -- much like the introduction -- must be brief, positive and optimistic. An ideal closing is: "Thank you for your time and consideration. I will follow up my application with a phone call to discuss how my skills and experience in a range of tasks can add value to your HR department."
